Decided to split it in sections since all the embedded videos might make it kinda laggy.
While going through the list I decided to make a guide for Steam’s Great Gift Pile. Credits go to the sites/videos as linked, although a few are written by myself, namely because I actually have the game. While I’m crazy enough to buy something just because it’s cheap (well, it has to look nice too), I’m not crazy enough to buy all the games just for this. For the other games I’ll comment based on the videos. I’ll update the list daily when there are new ones.

Make a bell chime in Descent
Valve Gift Grab 2011 – CS:S
Collect three gifts dropped by opponents.
Just play normally online or with bots. The easy way is to create a game with bots and have them use knife only while you kill them. Or you can use the bot_kill command (enable developer console in Options) to kill everyone (your teammates will drop gifts too).
It’s what killed the dinosaurs. Smash 100 frozen creatures to bits.
You can do this near the start of the game. There’s an easier method (maybe) if you have the “The Stars Are Left” DLC.
No Steam-based/free to play achievements today.
Day of Defeat: Source
Valve Gift Grab 2011
DoD:S – Collect three gifts dropped by opponents.
Join an empty server and kill yourself until you get three gifts.
Super Meat Boy
The Golden Gift!
Complete all levels in “The Kids Xmas” chapter in super meat world IN ONE PLAY SESSION.
There are quite a number of people experiencing an SQL error which prevents access to the Super Meat World maps (and thus the achievement), and there seems to be no known fix. So, you’ll probably have to wait for an official fix if you’re having this problem too (which seems to have been around since at least April, so…). Update: SQL error has been fixed.
Freeze the Earth by moving it further from the Sun
Follow the instructions in the first few seconds of the video.
Reach the south pole of Sernimir IV.
You’ll have to complete Assignment 2-5, There’s Something in the Fishcake. Check here for a list of links to the solutions.
Puzzle Agent 2
Christmas Tree Census
Spend over $202,259 of taxpayer dollars; The number of Christmas trees cut in Minnesota in 2007 (source: USDA).
You spend taxpayer dollars by failing puzzles, so just do so.
Flight Control HD
Land 5 helicopters in a row on the Windy airfield
You have to unlock Windy Airfield (7th level) first, if you haven’t played the game before. To unlock levels you need to land aircraft (IIRC about 500) in any level. Some tips:
- I found the 4th level the easiest to play on, and since it’s small-sized it’ll also be faster. I managed to unlock Windy Airfield in about 55 minutes.
- You can also fast forward by pressing F. The game will go back to normal speed if there are aircraft in danger of collision.
- You can land aircraft in any direction, it doesn’t have to fly in the runway’s path, it just has to touch the horizontal striped section (and when it does, it’s considered “safe”).
Just follow the link and link your Facebook account, logging in if necessary.
The Binding of Isaac
A Gift From Krampus
Find Krampus in Satans room for a gift!
Check the video’s description for more details.

All the info you need here. You can do this on Underhome’s Deep Temple Cavern. You need to destroy the 9 orb brains and the special orb brain will appear.
Total War: SHOGUN 2
Requiem of the Dead
Win a defensive siege battle with your daimyo during any winter turn.
Check this post on the Steam forums.
Men of War: Assault Squad
Crazy Scientist from the northern Arctic Cycle
Complete the bonus mission!

Left 4 Dead 2
Valve Gift Grab 2011 – L4D2
Collect three gifts dropped by Special Infected in Versus Mode.
You can do this normally, play with a friend or use this mod (should install by itself when you run the executable). Start the game, go to All Mutations -> Versus Mutations -> Versus Co-Op -> Versus Co-Op Custom Match Settings -> Create a Game Lobby. Edit your game settings and set Local Server as the server type. Then just play as a human and kill Special Infected (they’ll come pretty often) until you get 3 gifts.
Team Fortress 2 (free to play)
Valve Gift Grab 2011 – TF2
Collect three gifts dropped by opponents.
You can just do this normally or the easy way would be to enable developer console (Options -> Keyboard -> Advanced), start your own game, open the console (~), enter “mp_disable_respawn_times 1″and “bind k kill”. Suicide by pressing k until you get 3 gifts.
Space Pirates and Zombies
Santa’s Little Helper
Feed Santa so much milk and cookies, that an elf falls off his sleigh
Just keep killing enemy ships, eventually Santa will appear and drop a specialist (the elf).
Revenge of the Titans
DRUNKEN FAMILY ARGUMENT
Hurrah! Christmas is finally over!
You have to finish the bonus level for this.
Serious Sam 3: BFE
Christmas In Cairo
Decorate the Christmas tree.
Jingled All the Way
Delivered all the presents, and saved Santa Tavernkeep from the vile clutches of Mega-Snowman in the ‘Etherian Holiday Extravaganza Challenge Mission’!
Get the free DLC. You’ll need to beat the challenge mision for the achievement. If you haven’t played before, this will take some time to level your character up if you’re playing solo, otherwise you can try joining a game with other players to help you.
Festivus for the rest of us
Collect 10 presents.
This is done on the Christmas map (comes with the free DLC). Keep a lookout for Santa, who will appear randomly. Shoot him for presents, otherwise just get them from the santa hat-wearing monster drops. If/when Santa does appear, make sure you wait for him to appear above the map before you shoot him, otherwise the presents might drop in unreachable spots. Shouldn’t take too long.
Today’s freebie. If it doesn’t unlock, give it some time and refresh the page later on. As of posting, the system is pretty unresponsive since the new deals were up not long ago, but if you’re doing this much later on it shouldn’t be a problem.
AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome
I Have Come to The Point in My Life Where I Appreciate Christmas Mall Music
Seriously. Christmas mall music eventually seeps into your brain, and you get all domestic, and you start looking at the children and going, “well, wouldn’t it be nice to have kids of my own someday, so that I can play video games with them?” In the meantime, get 4 stars on all the levels in the freeeee Christmas Mall Music pack.
There’s 6 levels you have to clear and get 4 stars on. You can follow the video (has links to each level) for a recommended path, but this might take a few tries depending on how good you are.
Get 4 points in the star challenge mission “Snowball Fight”.
Seems straightforward enough. Before doing this though, you need to play the game and make your asteroid into a planet, then a star to unlock the Star Challenges. This might take awhile but I found the game strangely fun and addictive.
When you unlock the challenge, just hit the enemy star with your ice planets and avoid getting hit yourself. You can make it easier by destroying the enemy ice planets with yours to create an opening (or to end the challenge when you have 4 points), but it may or may not help that much depending on the planets’ orientation. Make sure you can still get 4 points though.
Yet, I Love The Holidays
Defeat the Holiday Whompa.
The Holiday Whompa is the second boss on the first floor. You should probably play the tutorial to know how the game works, or watch this video. In any case you have to finish the first few fights to progress.
Cities in Motion
Transport 1000 passengers during November, December and January of any year.
Best done on the Massive Munich campaign on Easy, you just need to fast forward the game and you’ll get it.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Retribution
Play for a total of 30 minutes against a human opponent on: Ice Station Obelis, Selenon Fissure, or Argent Shelf
Pretty straightforward, but may or may not be easy depending on your skill if you play normally. Or, you can find players to idle for 30 minutes with here.
Rusty Hearts (free to play)
All I Want for Christmas is Sewers
Complete the quest “A Simple Task” from Technical Officer Ryan.
Follow the video for a complete guide. Here’s the gist of it:
- Create a new character, using Frantz, should be easier if you’re starting out. I used Angela myself, who is a Mage but also uses a sword. It’s easier with a melee weapon (which Tude also has) since it lets you hit multiple enemies at a time. So the “worst” character would be Natasha, who uses guns (although she has skills which can hit multiple enemies).
- Finish the first 2 quests from Elma: Meet Vincent and Scout the Canals B3 (Normal).
- Finish Join the Militia from Georg, who is just opposite from the house that Elma is in.
- Finish A Simple Task from Ryan, who is just down the road. You need to get a B Rank. Pretty simple, I got SSS for the missions. Just run through the area killing enemies quickly (the faster the clear time the better), and keep your chain going while occasionally using your skills to mix up the attacks. Try not to get hit also. You probably won’t be hit much anyway, since most of the enemies are pretty slow. I didn’t touch the guard button at all, but you get more style points for blocking at the right moment.
According to this thread if you’ve played the game before, you might have completed the quest already. If so, you’ll have to create a new character (or use another one which hasn’t) for this. And apparently if you’re in Central/East Europe you might not be able to install the game either due to regional issues. A poster suggests using the address: steam://install/36630 to install the game, but you may or may not be able to register an account after that. The game takes forever to patch though, From the first menu there’s 2 (I install both patches separately) and after that there’s another one. If the game doesn’t start after you finish patching everything, you try disabling some of your anti-malware/virus programs. Pretty nice game overall if you like action-oriented RPGs, but the patching process is really lengthy. Not to mention I got a crappy coupon from it.
A Game of Thrones – Genesis
Winter is coming
Play as the Starks an entire multiplayer game or vs AI.
Sounds pretty straightforward. You’ll need to do this on a map with Starks playable, for example The Neck. Doesn’t seem like you need to win either (although you probably should try to win) so in the worst case scenario you could just let the AI beat you. Update: indeed, according to this post, you don’t have to win to get it.
Survive Christmas 10
In Survival Mode last 10 mins while playing to a Christmas Radio Station
You can either do this normally or follow the video for the easy method. There are 2 Christmas radio stations, if they’re not there you have to enable last.fm through the game.
Rock of Ages
Win a match using the Snowball boulder.
Just change your character to Snowball and start a mission. The video is based on Tutorial 2 (Sparta) in the Story mode.
Ride the Wind
Use the Skyway in the Wharf District.
This will be near the end of the first level. After getting the core, you have to reach the Skyway without falling off the path.
12 Days of Winterval
Deal exactly 12 damage to a worm with 100 health.
Can be done with fall damage from Jetpack or Teleport. If you can’t get the height right just restart and try again. Or you can try using the Blowtorch on an enemy worm.
Today’s freebie. Should unlock automatically if you already have 10 items in your wishlist, if not try adding one more game.
Kill a Commander in Silo during the 2011 Winter Sale
This is done on the Silo map. Santa hats need not be turned on (nd_xmas) for this. Best to use the Stealth Assassin and try and sneak into the enemy Commander’s bunker with your Tactical Cloak. Watch out for turrets and Assault classes who can see you with their thermal vision.
X3: Albion Prelude
It’s Cold Outside
Force a pilot to eject from his ship.
For this you need the base game X3: Terran Conflict first, which is also at 75% discount for US$4.99. But you might as well buy the X3 Terran War Pack with both for US$4.99 or one of the other packages. As for the achievement, check here. What you need to do is to find a lone ship and attack it until its shields are depleted and then work on weakening the hull to er, encourage the pilot to eject.
A Bloody Christmas Carol
Kill 15 XMas Clots, 5 xmas Stalkers, 5 XMas Crawlers, 1 XMas Siren and 1 XMas Bloat.
Just play this normally and you’ll get it pretty quickly. Might be easier to do this on Solo so you’ll be the only person killing the zombies. You can set it on Easy difficulty, and should get this around the third wave.
Car Jump I
You jumped 400m.
Atom Zombie Smasher
Defeat Wave 7 in the KringleJammer mini-game.
CrimeCraft GangWars (free to play)
Earn a total of 200 points from Snow Brawl matches. This match type can be found under the events tab in the battles menu starting from level 8
Points are earned from killing players, and the 200 is accumulative so it need not be done in a single game. You get on average 7 points per kill (it varies, not sure how), so luckily you don’t need 200 kills for this, or else it would take even longer. You can access Snow Brawl at level 1, despite what the achievement states (again, luckily). Some tips:
- Go to options and swap the special ability 1 (F1), which is to throw the snowball, with Fire (LMB). You’ll be using the snowball to attack anyway, so the regular Fire button will be useless. You’ll need to bind that to something else though, because you need to press Fire to exit the loading screen.
- Press the spacebar to roll, which helps you dodge attacks. If you get killed, you’ll have to wait for 15-20 seconds to respawn, and since each round is 10 minutes you won’t get to play much if you die often. Games are 4v4, but the map is small so you should be able to find enemies to kill quickly.
- On a related note, keep moving since stationary targets are free frags (so are back-facing enemies).
- If the enemy is walking, you’ll have to aim in front of him/her to hit. Or if you’re fighting each other, try to predict where he/she might go.
- You could bait an enemy by hiding in a room, and aim at the door.
- You can try rushing to an enemy and get a close-range kill since there’ll be a higher chance of hitting (same thing goes for your opponent though), or just lob from far. Or somewhere in-between, depending on your preference.
If you’re really good, you can do this in a round, if not, maybe 2-3 if you’re of average skill.
If the game is unable to install/update, try verifying the game cache integrity (Right Click the game in the Library -> Properties -> Local Files). If it still doesn’t work, check here.
Kill 50 enemies with electricity only
You get electrical kills by using either the N.R.G Weapon upgraded with the Shock Blaster (Level 1 Electric Taser) or electrical environment traps. You’ll come across the upgrade station about 5-10 into the game, and there’s plenty of electrical traps in Level 1. Just shoot them when the enemies are near. Shortly after that you’ll come across this open space (2:53 in the video) with plenty of traps and about 2 waves of enemies coming at you. It works if you die and restart from the checkpoint, so you can do that here (since there’s plenty of enemies to kill easily with the traps) or just continue playing normally.
With Your Nose So Bright…
Complete any mission playing as the Red Charge ship.
To unlock the Charge ship you need to finish the second mission first, but you also need $8000, which you’ll only get after replaying a few missions if you’re playing on Normal difficulty. Or, you can also play on Difficult, which is also mangeable (or higher if you’re good at it, of course). Then just complete any mission while using the Charge ship as the first (red) player. Personally I found the third mission (Badlands) easiest, I didn’t die in that level and the boss is pretty easy (again, on Normal), although the videos are all on the first mission. Shouldn’t be too hard, considering I’m pretty bad at these games usually (I didn’t beat StarCraft II‘s mini-game).
Wings of Prey
Complete any mission on winter locations: Korsun, Stalingrad or Bulge
As the name implies. The video below is based on the Counterattack mission in the Battle of Stalingrad.
Naughty or Nice
Receive a present from Santa Claus (Coldstrike DLC required)
As mentioned, you need the Coldstrike DLC, which is sold separately from the game for US$4.99 (it’s also not on sale at all). As mentioned in the comments for the video, Santa will appear randomly in the first level, and will not appear in co-op. You need to shoot him to get the present to drop, then just go over it to pick it up.
And Yet It Moves
Ride on a severed branch in Chapter Two for about 20 meters without touching the ground.
You can get this on the first level in Chapter Two. It’s near the start, when you encounter the first severed branch just walk back and forth to get the achievement. Make sure not to touch the ground (i.e. don’t walk too far beyond the branch). You need to unlock the levels though, so if it’s your fist time playing you’ll have to finish Chapter One first. Shouldn’t be too difficult, but if you need a walkthrough follow this video. Just some stuff I thought might be useful to point out:
- In the third level you need at least 3 stones to break the web at the end.
- In the fourth, you need 3 bats to remove the iguana (?), and if you manage to get a bat to fly towards the iguana, it’ll stay there until you get enough bats to remove it.
- Also in the fourth, about 1 or 2 checkpoints later on, at the place with water droplets, you need to rotate the level to get them to drop on the stone in the middle, in case it wasn’t obvious enough.
